B.S. (Honors) in Remote Sensing

Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Remote Sensing (BSRS) is an applied science and technology program that produces graduates with a sound knowledge and skills in remote sensing technology and other geo-spatial related technologies which have found worldwide applications in natural resource management (hazard and vulnerability detection and geo-spatial mapping), environmental management, business, social sciences (gender, poverty, crime, home security mapping) and other related sciences and national strategic planning, as well as geospatial intelligence, etc. Remote sensing technology is defined by the United Nations as "the sensing of the earth's surface from space by making use of property of electromagnetic waves, emitted, reflected or diffracted by the sensed objects, for the purpose of improving natural resources management, land use and the protection of the environment".

Learning Outcomes

We prepare our graduates for a professional career and for academic research. The emphasis of the program is on both theoretical and practical techniques for the design and development of remote sensing-based decision-support systems, enabling graduates to apply their knowledge and skills in a variety of settings.

Key Skills

This skills developed as students follow this program have clear application in government/industry, private and business/entrepreneurial settings.
Personal discipline, critical thinking, inter- and intra-personal motivation, problem-solving, planning and organising are all essential skills for the students to develop. In addition, ethical thinking, entrepreneurial thinking, innovative thinking and perseverance in pursuing goals is encouraged. Such interpersonal skills as team work, collaboration and conflict resolution are improved through carefully planned assignments. Presentation skills, both oral and written are used and improved throughout the degree.
All necessary skills and tools for problem-solving and for the design and construction of spatial-based decision support systems are developed.

Duration

Program Duration

A total of ten semesters is required for graduation. The required 176 credit hours are distributed over the ten semesters with an average load of 17.6 credit hours/semester.

Program Structure

The ten (10) semester program includes both theoretical and practical courses. Broadly speaking, the theoretical foundation is laid during the first four semesters and this knowledge is consolidated by inclusion of more practical courses in the final six semesters so as to allow the students of this program an element of concentration in the field of remote sensing and geo-spatial allied courses in GIS.
The first four semesters of the program introduce the students to the courses of mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, languages, humanities and a few general computer science courses. This helps them to develop students' personal and interpersonal skills. The remaining six semesters include courses focused on acquiring the required level of technical competency in the field of remote sensing
